Are you looking to get into the child neurology residency program of your dreams? We’ve got you covered! Here, we’ll give you the inside scoop on which child neurology programs have the highest and lowest publications, MD-PhDs, AOA, and Gold Humanism members among matched applicants. So, if you’re curious about child neurology or have a specific program in mind, you can learn all the details you need to maximize your chances of becoming a child neurologist.

Which Child Neurology Residency Programs Require the Most Research?

As discussed previously, matched child neurology applicants have moderate numbers of abstracts, presentations, and publications.

But how many publications are expected of each child neurology residency? Here, we’ll discuss which programs have the most – and fewest – publications among their residents. That way, you can make an informed decision and feel hopeful about getting into the program that’s right for you.

Let’s look at which child neurology residency programs have the most – and least – publications among their members. (NOTE: the data here reports the Average number of peer-reviewed publications among matched applicants. This is more narrow – and restrictive – than the “abstracts, presentations, and publications,” measure found on ERAS and reported by the Charting Outcomes in the Match reports.)

Which Child Neurology Residency Programs Have the Most MD-PhDs?

Are you hoping to get into a child neurology residency program? Having an MD-PhD may help you stand out, but it’s not always necessary.

As noted previously, having an MD-PhD is associated with an increased likelihood of matching into child neurology as a specialty. Note that this is a relatively small advantage (~3% match rate increase for those with a PhD vs. those without).

Check out this list of child neurology residency programs in the US and their MD-PhD percentages.

Which Child Neurology Programs Have the Most AOA and Gold Humanism Honor Society Members?

Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) and Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) memberships are two important factors in the child neurology residency matching process. AOA recognizes students and residents who excel academically, in leadership, and in professionalism, while GHHS recognizes individuals who show exceptional qualities in patient-centered care and humanism.

As noted before, AOA membership is associated with an increased likelihood of matching into child neurology.

Here we list the US child neurology residency programs and the% of their residents who were AOA or GHHS members. Note you can search for individual programs, sort the data, and many other useful things in your child neurology residency search.

Child Neurology Programs with the Most and Least AOA and GHHS Members

The child neurology residency programs with the highest reported percentage of AOA members are:

  • University of Colorado Program
  • Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center Program
  • Stanford Health Care-Sponsored Stanford University Program
  • Johns Hopkins University Program
  • Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Program

The child neurology residency programs with the lowest reported percentage of AOA members are:

  • Phoenix Children’s Hospital Program
  • University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center Program
  • UPMC Medical Education Program
  • Baylor College of Medicine Program
Are AOA Numbers Artificially Low in the Most Competitive Child Neurology Residency Programs?

As we can see above, while AOA and GHHS membership can be beneficial, it’s not necessarily a critical factor in being accepted into a child neurology residency program.

For example, the Harvard child neurology program only had 16% of its residents with AOA memberships and only 23% with GHHS memberships. (The Harvard child neurology program is Children’s Hospital/Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Harvard Medical School Program).

So, why might some of the most competitive child neurology residency programs have fewer AOA and GHHS members? One potential explanation is that some of the most prestigious medical schools don’t have AOA chapters. For example, the medical schools at Harvard, Stanford, Yale, and UCSF all lack AOA chapters.

Ultimately, it’s essential to remember that AOA and GHHS membership can be important factors in getting accepted into a child neurology residency program. However, they’re not the only ones. There are plenty of other ways to make your application stand out, such as having strong USMLE scores, letters of recommendation, and a well-crafted personal statement.

Concluding Thoughts

Publications; AOA and GHHS membership; and having a PhD can all benefit an application into child neurology. However, as we can see, different child neurology residency programs have different expectations as to what they are looking for in applicants.
