Are you looking to get into the pathology residency program of your dreams? We’ve got you covered! Here, we’ll give you the inside scoop on which pathology programs have the highest and lowest publications, MD-PhDs, AOA, and Gold Humanism members among matched applicants. So, if you’re curious about pathology or have a specific program in mind, you can learn all the details you need to maximize your chances of becoming a pathologist.

Which Pathology Residency Programs Require the Most Research?

As discussed previously, matched pathology applicants have moderate amounts numbers of abstracts, presentations, and publications.

But how many publications are expected of each pathology residency? Here, we’ll discuss which programs have the most – and fewest – publications among their residents. That way, you can make an informed decision and feel hopeful about getting into the program that’s right for you.

Let’s look at which pathology residency programs have the most – and least – publications among their members. (NOTE: the data here report the Average number of peer-reviewed publications among matched applicants. This is more narrow – and restrictive – than the “abstracts, presentations, and publications,” measure found on ERAS and reported by the Charting Outcomes in the Match reports.)

Which Pathology Residency Programs Have the Most MD-PhDs?

Are you hoping to get into a pathology residency program? Having an MD-PhD may help you stand out, but it’s not always necessary.

As noted previously, having an MD-PhD is associated with an increased likelihood of matching into pathology as a specialty. Note that this is a relatively small advantage (~2% match rate increase for those with a PhD vs. those without).

Check out this list of pathology residency programs in the US and their MD-PhD percentages.

Pathology Programs with the Highest Percentage of MD-PhDs

Here are the pathology programs with the highest reported % of residents who were graduates of MD-PhD programs:

  • Massachusetts General Hospital Program (52%)
  • Stanford Health Care-Sponsored Stanford University Program (41%)
  • Brigham and Women’s Hospital Program (39%)
  • University of California (San Francisco) Program (30%)
  • New York Presbyterian Hospital (Columbia Campus) Program (27%)
  • University of Pennsylvania Health System Program (27%)
  • University of Washington Program (26%)

Pathology Programs with the Lowest Percentage of MD-PhDs

While having an MD-PhD can give you a leg up on matching into pathology, note that there are many programs without an MD-PhD among their residents. In fact, there were only 41 (28%) programs that reported having any graduates from MD-PhD programs.

Which Pathology Programs Have the Most AOA and Gold Humanism Honor Society Members?

Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) and Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) memberships are two important factors in the pathology residency matching process. AOA recognizes students and residents who excel academically, in leadership, and in professionalism, while GHHS recognizes individuals who demonstrate exceptional qualities in patient-centered care and humanism.

As noted before, AOA membership is associated with a slightly increased likelihood of matching into pathology.

Here we list the US pathology residency programs and the % of their residents who were AOA or GHHS members. Note you can search for individual programs, sort the data, and many other useful things in your pathology residency search.

Pathology Programs with the Most and Least AOA and GHHS Members

The pathology residency programs with the highest reported percentage of AOA members are:

  • Massachusetts General Hospital Program
  • University of Michigan Health System Program
  • University of Virginia Medical Center Program
  • Johns Hopkins University Program
  • Vanderbilt University Medical Center Program

The pathology residency programs with the lowest reported percentage of AOA members are:

  • USA Health Program
  • Baylor College of Medicine Program
  • Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Harvard Medical School Program
  • University of Colorado Program
  • University of Southern California/LAC+USC Medical Center Program
Are AOA Numbers Artificially Low in the Most Competitive Pathology Residency Programs?

As we can see above, while AOA and GHHS membership can be somehow beneficial, it’s not necessarily a critical factor in being accepted into a pathology residency program.

For example, the Stanford pathology program only had 4% of its residents with AOA membership and only 6% with GHHS membership.

So, why might some of the most competitive pathology residency programs have fewer AOA and GHHS members? One potential explanation is that some of the most prestigious medical schools don’t have AOA chapters. For example, the medical schools at Stanford, Harvard, Yale, and UCSF all lack AOA chapters.

In summary, while AOA membership is an important achievement, it is not the only factor that residency programs consider when evaluating applicants. Pathology residency programs may place less emphasis on AOA membership and more on other factors such as research experience, leadership, and clinical skills. Therefore, AOA numbers may appear artificially low in some of the most competitive pathology residency programs.

Concluding Thoughts

Publications; AOA and GHHS membership; and having a PhD can all benefit an application into pathology. However, as we can see, different pathology residency programs have different expectations as to what they are looking for in applicants.
